I haven't seen it, but from my knowledge of the book maybe this is a problem with the rural British setting of the original story not translating into American sentiments very well.

This was my favourite book as an extremely small child, and I couldn't bear to watch it with a transposed setting. Good to know it's not considered perfect by everybody.

This was my favorite Roald Dahl when I was a kid, and it was 100% because I found the description of the food they were stealing so delicious and inviting lol. Them postwar British writers of children’s books really knew how to make a kid hungry.
