When the canons themselves often do a shitty job of research, I have a hard time getting that mad at the fans

+1, I'd love it if the creators of, say, House MD, had done any research on nurses actually existing. Or radiographers, or anyone except doctors and the very occasional janitor.

Some shows are so bad at basic military things like hair regulations or uniform stuff that it’s actively distracting, as a vet, when all they had to do was ask a vet for that service. I’m sure there’s some military consulting firm that does this, but if there’s just a minor element to your story, ask a vet.

Ditto for fic. I guarantee you if you ask on tumblr some vet will help you out! I’m sure people in other various fields don’t mind answering a few questions either, from nursing to stand up comedy.

If you're reviewing Top Gun and don't understand that they are Navy (yes, even if they're flying planes! That doesn't make them Air Force by default!) then you're dumb and bad. I don't expect anybody to be experts but at least some movies get the basics.

Yes literally, this was my final straw. I feel like the movie is very clear that they are in the Navy what with the ships and all the times they say "Navy" but by Grabhtar's hammer I have had enough.

I guess... it depends on what they're reviewing? Are they reviewing the represented structure of the military in the game/show/book/whatever? Or are they reviewing the media independent of the fact that it's about military stuff?

Think: Reviewing old A-Team episodes and downgrading them because Ace is WAAAAAAY too young to be an officer. He'd have to spend X Many years getting to be a Sargent and then X Many years to become an officer and than a couple years in each grade to get to his claimed rank. And, like, it can work like that but it absolutely does not have to. You can easily have an O3 in his mid 20s.

Oh yeah that would be annoying as heck. xD

Thank you secret maker!

This has been festering for a while, I'm honestly very annoyed and I'm avoiding reviews of anything that features military stuff unless I trust the reviewer. Spoiler alert: I don't trust any reviewer. I have no idea what happens in the new Top Gun movie and will probably never see it. I don't want all my reviews to be vetted by the Pentagon (ew) I just don't want to sit through another 5 minute interlude about how all these guys are flying planes why are they saying Navy?!?!?

You are so obviously from USA that this secret is almost endearing :')
