Most of the big popular comics started their runs in serialized issues that were printed very cheaply, so the ink would fade easily, and bolding words was a way of preserving the most important bits of the dialogue for a longer period of time while being less costly than doing that for the entirety of the dialogue. Nowadays it's mainly a legacy that continues because people came to expect comic speech to look that way.
