One of the Pokemon episodes has James shouting "4KIDS IS OF THE DEVIL!" backmasked (I'm not making this up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQppQcM4kJc)), so I'd guess they're aware of it. I dunno if I'd say they feel guilty or not, but I'm sure they all have different opinions. (What's hilarious about that example is, the director and engineer of that scene probably had to be in on that, too...)

Still, a job's a job, and...come on, seriously, has there been any anime like that since 4Kids got out of the dubbing business?

We don't. Not even a tiny bit. And if it really means so much to you, that's what subtitles are for. The English dubs aren't meant to replace the originals, but in many cases to make them more accessible to a wider range of people. Sometimes they hit, sometimes they miss, but like you said, it's not our fault as VAs.

Would you feel guilty for just doing your job? I didn't think so.

You do realize that there are anime that don't have a commercial subbed release, right (it's becoming rare, but there are still a few)? So in those cases, what are we supposed to do?

I don't know if they do, but if so, they shouldn't; it really isn't their fault.

I do know that apparently fans come up to them at conventions and such and blame them for ruining the shows. Which is pretty sad.

Haha, the scene in my icon is my favorite from the whole series. It surprised me so much that I paused the DVD on that screen for while, just to stare at it.

It puts food on the table and keeps a roof over the heads of their wee children. I don't see any reason why they should.

You, on the other hand, have put a cartoon show on a pedestal while brother shoots brother in the streets and our planet is slowly becoming uninhabitable because of our own alteration of its climate. The world has bigger fish to fry than preserving the "sanctity" of your anime.

Just for laughs - Michael Caine on making the movie "Jaws 4: the Revenge":

I get the feeling that for a lot of the English VAs dubbing anime is just a job to them and they care more about the original characters they voice in American/Canadian cartoons.

I can see where they're coming from, in the English cartoons they might at least get input into their character's storyline (I know some live action TV actors (Bob Picardo got some say about the holodoc on Voyager) get some input into their characters so maybe its the same for VAs?)

But that Michael Caine quote is magnificient.

It reminds me about what some comedian said about the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, he said he needed the money and he built a log cabin with the proceeds

I usually dislike most English dubs, but . . .

1) The VAs are just doing their jobs. It's okay to not like a particular VA or the way they dub a voice (I, for one, pretty much despise Vic Mignogna), but they have nothing to feel guilty over. That's like asking if someone working at a restaurant feels guilty for the cow that was slaughtered to make a steak, or if someone working at a retail store feels guilty about the sheep that was sheared to make a woolen coat. You can dislike a particular VA or the way dubbed voices sound all you want, but don't say the VAs should feel guilty; they're just doing their job.

Besides, some of them (unlike Vic) have actual talent (like Cam Clarke), and should be praised and truly loved. <3 (To this day, I STILL prefer Cam's rendition of Kratos Aurion MUCH BETTER than the Japanese voice, which makes him sound too much like an old man.)

I want to do voicework professionally. I like anime, I even prefer subtitles. I know I won't feel guilty if this career pans out for me.

I'd feel kinda bad doing my job terribly. Guilty for ripping off people by producing crap. Kind of sucks how they can get paid for ruining things.

But, it is just an anime and doesn't matter that much. And I'm sure they're decent people who need the money and if that comes at the price of tearing good art to shreds, then so be it. They have better things to worry about than principles, like putting food on the table.

It's mostly the dialogue writers, anyways, not the VAs.
