Well, I always saw it as a romance novel. Romance novels can have satire and witty observations, too. :/

But romance novels generally make love a lot more important than it was in P&P. I wouldn't say "follow your heart" is really a message in Jane Austen. I think she's more interested in how they behave towards people in general than who they want to marry.

"following one's heart" doesn't necessarily refer to just who someone's interested in romantically, though --- I meant it in a more general, "do what you believe is right, despite others' pressures."

I haven't read the novel in awhile, though, so I could be remembering it a bit wrong. But it did seem to have that sort of message to me --- that worrying about society's opinion and appearances shouldn't be so important. :/

I would definitely say that Jane Austen stories put morally right above fashionable. But what society deems acceptable is a huge part of what's right for the characters. Lydia, for instance, does what she wants without much caring about what society thinks and Elizabeth is appalled. Emma is horrified at the idea of Knightley disgracing himself by marrying Harriet. For JA there's no world outside of acceptable society, really.

But I don't think you're wrong for getting the message that worrying about appearances etc. shouldn't be *so* important. Truth is far more important than appearances and snobbish or boastful characters get slammed. It's just not that important by modern or romance standards. A good marriage is a respectable one as well as a happy one.
