Now see, I prefer it when people label fanfic as Epilogue? What Epilogue? or pre-HBP instead of AU, because I prefer to keep the AU label for stuff like what ifs. Using AU to describe a fanfic you wrote in 2004 that was canon-compliant until mid-2005 is annoying, and I have different expectations of a fic that says it's ignoring the epilogue versus one that calls itself an AU. I expect an AU to have an eye on how what they changed affects the canon we know, while something just ignoring it doesn't have to do that. So I appreciate when authors go to the effort of being specific of what they're basing their fanfic on instead of just slapping AU on everything. As for arguments of canon compliance, I haven't read a lot of post-DH fanfic so I might have missed the tone you describe towards real AU's, but I don't see anything wrong with saying that something's canon compliant except for the epilogue or a statement that they're ignoring it.
