Agreed about The Thing. A+ ending. I'm not obsessed with The Thing the way a lot of horror buffs are (it's good but it's not in my top ten), but damn it sticks the landing.

I think I agree about The Descent. It's so, SO (fucking SO) dark that I'm not really sure how I feel about it beyond that I generally prefer not to think about it too much, lol. But I've always respected The Descent for being so absolute in what it is. The progression from claustrophobic tension to terror to blind chaos to despair to absolute hopelessness was weirdly unique. I'm not really sure what makes it experientially different than other horror movies, but I've never watched another horror movie that took me to such a dark place without making it about grotesquery.
