Spoilers for War and Peace

The Rustov’s packing up their house to leave Moscow was so stressful I’ve rechecked my own wildfire evacuation procedures. Sonya’s doing her best but the Count just pops in to give random and confusing orders, the Countess is more interested in getting her youngest son to pay attention to her, her youngest son is more interested in hanging out with the army, and Natasha can’t ‘focus’ she can only ‘hyper-focus’ (how dare he make Natasha #relatable STOP IT)

Until the Count comes home one day just like “Whoops! We’ve stayed too long the gentleman’s club is closed everybody PANIC” and they do. And then they pack and unpack and repack and load and unload and reload and change everything and good on them for taking some wounded folks but if I were a house serf in the Rustov’s estate I would spit in every goddamn drink FOREVER what a nightmare.

Other great line: “Meanwhile Moscow was empty. There were still people in it, perhaps a fiftieth part of its former inhabitants had remained, but it was empty.”
I get what he’s saying, but it made me laugh. Also the description of Moscow as a beehive with a dead queen was evocative and effected me greatly. I have no idea how much I trust the author to know anything about beehives but you know what? I’m not going to check.

I just want to say I appreciate the updates because I'm not reading this book (started Crime & Punishment and never finished) and the only thing WAP related I'm familiar with Natasha, Pierre & the Comet of 1812, which I highly recommend if you like musicals.

Also, which translation are you reading?

I'm actually listening to an audio book, Louise Maude/Aylmer Maude are listed as translators. (Thandiwe Newton is the narrator and she does a great job giving people personality.) This is the main reason I haven't given up yet. It takes up a full gb on my phone and I can't download anything else to distract from it.

I am ABSOLUTELY going to catch the musical once I'm done. It'll be my reward.
