But that's never kept anyone from fangirling characters like Mikami, has it? He's batshit and kills as many innocent people in a fashion that's just as hilarious, but because Death Note has a bigger fandom and he's hot, people love him.
Trust me, there's more there than you realize. I believe the internet is the last anthropological frontier, and fandom's a huge part of that. Complex social interaction, tradition, taboo, we have it all!
Grell is quite possible the most annoying character EVER. Goddamn. Half the reason I stopped watching the show--the other half being that it was just a big pile of bore.
I think it just has to do with certain associations people both outside and inside fandom make. For example: I've got a friend outside fandom who think that ALL fandom is nothing but 'simpering obessive nerds, ala Trekkies' {I'm quoting her verbatim). Meanwhile, it's not terribly good IN fandom- say you like slash, for example, and you're lumped into the obnoxious slash!fangirl catagory.
It's like you can't win either way. I don't make a point of my being involved in any fandom unless someone else brings it up, first.
I really liked the new Star Trek movie but I'm really scared to get into fandom because I've never seen the original series. I wish there could be a separate fandom based solely on the movie. Because now I'm a lurker.
