Gurren Laggan never appealed to me. Yes, I saw the series and yes I get that it's about how people evolve and can do impossible stuff and all that...

But neither the characters or the way the story was told appealed to me. Nope, not even Kamina.

kamina was actually one of the least appealing characters in the entire series, for me.

Yeah, I never undestood the fangasm people had for him. :/

That's because it's a mediocre show, anon.

I'm the same way. I was actually happy when Kamina died. Fucking annoying character. Its whole premise just screamed "REHASHED DISNEY MOVIE PLOT" to me.

When it aired, I was part of a forum that went literally apeshit over it, and I frequented /a/ quite a lot around then. I thought it was absolutely amazing, beyond anything else I've ever seen before.

Or so I was lead to believe. After the hype died down considerably, I gained a critical eye and I realised, that if I watched it without the communities around me, I wouldn't have liked it as much as I originally did.

Fandom has a large part to play in the greater scheme of things.

I thought it was cheesy as hell.

Not surprising except when everyone keeps talking about how it's the best thing ever and it SAVED THEIR LIFE...

I love Gurren Lagann and Kamina, but I will be the first to admit that the show is absolutely ludicrous. There is no logic anywhere NEAR the plot, the characters are shallow stereotypes, and it is extremely cliche.

Campy shows are not for everyone. Sometimes I'm in the mood to just watch some robots transform Voltron-style on a background of flying rainbow colors, not some deep intellectual show that makes me question my values and character.

I think it's important to reject reality sometimes.
