Rian Johnson is much better at having free reign to do his own thing than trying to work withing the confines of an established property. Honestly, I was the most surprised at how good the pacing was in the Knives Out movies, because the pacing in TLJ is a mess.

I think that was the biggest issue with TLJ - it was obvious with every second that he kinda hated working on it because he couldn't do completely what he wanted so he made it his mission to mess up as much as he could out of sheer loathing, pettiness and being stuck too far up his own ass.
