Re: WTF moments when reading fan fiction?

I've been reading fanfic so long, there's not a lot that fazes me anymore content wise. Though I'm starting to wonder if schools are that shitty these days as I'm seeing a LOT of the same mistakes - lied instead of lay, kneeled instead of knelt, "are you fine?" instead of "are you okay?" - and it's slowly driving me up a wall.

It's not schools, it's poor vocab because most people don't read books for fun anymore. Most people's regular language input is from social media, which is a shitshow.

There's also a cut back on editing happening as far as I can tell - because I regularly see spelling and grammar errors in both published books and newspaper articles.

I'm guilty of the kneeled one. For some reason it comes up as a wrong word when I write knelt so I thought it wasn't a real word for a while.

It's possible that a lot of people writing fanfic in English lately are actually not native English speakers.
My main ship has a lot of non native speakers posting on AO3 (I am one myself, as you can see lol).

AYRT

That was my original thought since I'm reading a lot of fic where the source material is not English. But the writing almost always seems like the writer is fluent in English EXCEPT these mistakes and it's always the same ones.
