"All ~problematic~ things are exactly the same, from writing fiction containing things I don't like to actually beating your wife" is their logic.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'd easily believe the focus on comedy that depends on making people sit uncomfortably through an uncomfortable situation (the aforementioned marhty giving a blow job to his uncle in the pilot ep) while some character says a string of excuses about why things are okay actually could in theory mirror some uncomfortable things irl that happened in a friend group. I guess.

I think perhaps it's more a generalized problem that the character rick is an asshole, and follows along the tradition of asshole/slob animated dad characters like Homer Simpson, and Peter griffin. The show does on occasion make the point that being an asshole is not good, but it could be easy enough to see that self-reflection as hollow in light of recent events.

Me personally I just didn't like how they handled Summer, and I never watched more than three eps. I hear about the criticism all the time though!

LMFAO

if you never watched more than 3 eps you have no right to even opine on "how they did Summer" oh mmy god. Summer has been through at least three character arcs by this point. shut the fuck up if you don't actually watch the show.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
nah i'm more fine with you shutting the fuck up you overopinionated shit lol.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

In this case, having more information as opposed to 'never having watched more than three episodes ' isn't so much 'overopinionated' as, well, better informed.

The show's vibes were off to me after only a couple of episodes and a season finale, and my attempt to be even handed with explaining gently why some people may not enjoy the humor got that shitty response. Really puts a damper on any conversation, so fuck them and fuck the showrunner.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
This is just the kind of thing that people always say in these situations, it's no more or less stupid than it always is

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
People like to think they can tell. Which is really shitty as well as being untrue in 99% of cases.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I’ve only seen anyone say that sort of thing within context of JR making claims like he modelled certain character traits on himself. Couple that with his BFF being a rapey piece of shit who also happened to make one of the most disgusting videos ever uploaded to the internet and yeah, it’s really not surprising that JR assaulted his partner. The only surprising thing is that it didn’t catch any media notice for almost three years despite a over a dozen court appearances.

I think there are reasonable connections you can make between types of different behavior (i.e. everyone talked about how they knew weinstein was a major cruel bully but they didn't think he was a rapist....and I, uh, thought that was a weird mental limit to place on a person who is notably cruel and bullying and intensely so...like...if he doesn't respect anyone's no in regards to business because he likes having power...I don't think he's gonna respect "no"s in sex), and I will genuinely say that if people have harmful morals regarding power in one aspect, I 100% assume they're also misogynists, but most of the time people are comparing things that simply don't have the same psychological motivations or trigger and are engaging in safety rituals.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
You can't win with people who try to tie a writer's morality to what they write. If Rick and Morty was somehow the most wholesome, uncontroversial show ever you'd have people claiming he was trying too hard to hide his sins or whatever.

Anyone who claims they could tell is deluded, as absolutely anything could be stretched into proof.

Yuppppp. Rurouni Kenshin is a series with a very wholesome protagonist and message, but when its creator was found with sexually exploitative videos of young girls, some people said "Well this sure paints Kenshin's backstory and quest to become a good person in a new light." Like it was now obviously all along a redemption fantasy metaphor for the mangaka redeeming himself.

I mean, the author did have an obvious taste for underage love interests in his stories and I hated the romances he wrote but it's nothing unusual for the genre and not something that automatically makes an author a real life pedo.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 06:41 am (UTC)(link)

My guy he marries someone who is like 16 when he himself is 28 and Megumi is in a relationship with someone equally as young to her being older. Looking back, yeah, it made a lot more fucking sense. It wasn't the redemption aspect that ooged people, it was how huge the age gaps between love interests were quite often. (Yahiko got it, too, IIRC, with one of the toddler girls when they were older, IIRC?)

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
He also got married to an older woman when he himself was very much underage (and murdered her husband). And then there was the Misao and Aoshi thing which was similarly skeevy in hindsight.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-21 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh never got it either. I watched the show until the episode with Evil Morty winning the election. Everyone in the show was flawed, and sometimes awful for shock value, but the women weren't particularly one-dimensional. Both Summer and Elizabeth had interesting traits. I think it was obvious that we were meant to find Rick off-putting and entertaining in a train wreck way but he constantly put the lives of people around him in danger and like...I always wondered why people thought the writing glorified him.

I'm sure that there are some details in the show which reflect the creator's dynamics and relationship to control as tends to be the case with art, but it's not as clear-cut as many people are making it out to be.

I don't know who this is, but anyone who says they 'always knew'/'could tell' about some horrible act some person committed and then continued to follow them (even though they so totally knew) let alone brag about it after the fact, should really get a reality check.

Yes, I agree. this has frustrated me ever since the news broke. it feels so trivialising of the actual abuse to be moralising over the content of his show. it is so dangerous to presume that abusers only make stuff that is full of perceived red flags. besides which, it's not even really his show anymore. the show is written by a team and it gives him way too much credit over r&m as a whole.
