Nicoloai and Pierre talking Politics: (blah)
Me, only knowing the Decemberists as an indie band,: Hang on let me google something real quick.
[3 hours of documentary later]
Me: yeah that tracks.

Ok but no really, its kind of so tragic that the two women who Deserved Better (Sonya and Mariah) end up together but they're Not Friends?!? Like?! What a sad day. I mean, everyone is living and doing their best and there are babies ever after and pretty much everyone is rich but its so painfully realistic that the story isn't "over" we're just not reading it any more.

This is the most Epilogue any epilogue has ever been. The Ur Epilogue. The Urpilogue.

I kind of love that foreshadowing hadn't been invented yet. Stuff has been happening for 550,000 words now and it all tracks but none of it *means* anything, not really? Like, remember when Pierre got fucking wrecked and tied a police man to a bear? Yeah. Good times. But he faces no real consequences (once he gets rich) and doesn't have a real drinking problem and that cop never comes back. Denisov gets some kind of punishment for stealing that food because Nicolai fails to convince the Tsar to spare him but also it doesn't matter because the next time we see him he's leading a cavalry unit. Nicoloai loses all that money and like, sure, his dad is broke as hell when he dies but Nicolai doesn't use that as his rock bottom to unfuck his financial literacy, but also decades later he's a great land lord somehow. How did he figure it out? Who taught him? Shut the fuck up, we've got to talk about how Napoleon doesn't matter. It's like a biography of people who mostly didn't exist just to prove that they could have. I mostly love it, but yeah it really doesn't fit the format of any kind of novel. Maybe it's Modern Fiction Brain Rot but reading this book and expecting shit to come back, to be followed up on later, and then just *never* having to worry about that is as freeing as it is unsettling.

And now it's time for Epilogue 2. Theories on History and Free Will Boogaloo.

I mean, Tolstoy so blatantly ignores his contemporary colleague Chekhov. Mostly because Chekhov was into SHORT stories.:D :D

Speaking about Tolstoy being little shit I am going to be off topic here for a bit.
I've been at this exhibition named, I kid you not, "the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in Russia". To be fair, Russians do love Sherlock Holmes. Anyway. There were stories about different Russian and Soviet writers and how they were inspired by Conan Doyle.
Aaaaand there was Tolstoy who was extremely against because Sherlock Holmes was "romanticizing detectives". That tracks.

SA
I know, I know, Chekhov was later from the next generation of writers. But for comedy reasons...

AAAAH you got me, I had a full moment of thinking Checkov was way earlier than I had thought.

=D =D =D

They had this period of being both adults at the same time, so sometimes I am going hmmm m. But I am pretty sure War and Peace was written when Chekhov was just a child.

That's fantastic and so on brand for him omg. I love it when classical writers/old fashioned celebrities have beef. The fact that Harry Houdini 1) commissioned a story from Lovecraft and 2) thought Doyle was a sucker for supernatural con-men gives me LIFE. I love the thought of Tolstoy sitting in a parlor just hating Sherlock Holmes while a thousand miles away Doyle is plotting Sherlock's death so he can focus on stories about dinosaurs and homo-eroticism. ~wavelength buddies~

Yes! I always forget that famous classical authors were people, with their extremely petty beefs. Or being really into weird shit. It's so funny.

Oh, Tolstoy was ~active~, he was writing articles about pulp fiction killing literature. I just can't
