Man... You really don't get tiers, huh?

The fact is, if there's a Pokemon that does a job better than another, you will use the former EVERY SINGLE TIME. Therefore, the second is obsolete, therefore it is Never Used. It's not some asswipe going "well hey Dunsparce is really quite ass let's make him there,"- tiers are determined 100% by the actual usage of Pokemon in the COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT.

Lern 2 metagame plz.

Ok, yeah, you definitely don't get it. Tiers are based off a competitive metagame. IE: Doing everything possible to give yourself an advantage. If you like the second more than the first, that's great. The second is still inferior to the first, either stat or move pool wise, and using him will put you at a disadvantage. If you're playing casually or for fun, great, but if you're playing in a competitive environment, you probably can't afford to do that.

No, I get competitive gaming, and tiers, and metagame, etc etc etc.

I just disagree that someone will always use the better pokemon every single time. Sometimes you like to win with what you like. Sometimes you like try to win with the obvious underdog. Whether or not you can afford to do it doesn't mean many people won't.

See, but now you're no longer describing the competitive environment. Competitive battling is 100% using the most effective strategies to try and win. If you don't like that, people are always holding "favourites" tournaments with more egalitarian approaches. But when the sole objective is to pit your wits, knowledge and prediction against other people, it's not "arrogant" to choose not to disadvantage yourself for some kind of weird Pokemon socialism.

I... I never said it was arrogant. I just said it's not true.

Sometimes half the fun of the competition is going "rogue". It's not fun winning if you don't do it on your own terms. If all you're doing is playing to win, yes, you'll always choose the best of the best. But that's not all the competition is to everyone.

Maybe I'm just too tainted by the Magic The Gathering competitive scene and demographics.

Sorry, I kind of figured you were the OP.

Again, you keep mixing up competitive and non-competitive. To a competitive player, winning is the only important thing. The fun comes in out strategizing and out predicting your opponents. And let's not forget, many top-tier pokemon ARE exceptionally badass. As soon as anything comes into it other than winning, it's not competitive. Obviously it can be just as serious, and just as intense, and as much if not more fun, but it makes me wonder why the hell the OP is hanging around Smogon, which is 100% competitive, then bitching about lack of anime-esque ethics.

No, I'm not mixing up competitive and non-competitive. I'm saying competitive isn't always about "win by whatever mean necessary". Sometimes it's about winning on your own terms. That might be what the competitive scene is to you, but not to everyone.
