I'd imagine it's for visibility. A lot of the night scenes shot these days are far too dark and impossible to see things clearly in the name of being realistic but for a lot of us it's just frustrating. I'd rather the lighting be less realistic and be able to see what's going on instead of the lighting being realistic and me having no idea what's happening.
