yeah that makes sense - I use to avoid wank coms like the plague and just stuck to the shipping comms on LJ that were dedicated to individual ships to avoid the 'NO MY SHIP IS BEST SHIP' people. So I never really had the toxic experience until I started going onto Tumblr.
