While fandom has always had plenty of bullies (and I do not miss the homophobic bullying at all), I do find the anti brigade pretty disturbing. It bothers me to see the usual fandom spats portrayed as the ultimate arbiter of good and bad people, like if you like X pairing you're a pedophilic rapist racist.

I always think people who are of the notion that fandom has gotten worse were never in wanky fandoms with abusive mods and groups of trolls who would chase people they didn’t like out. The shittyness of fandom is absolutely magnified more with how social media makes it easy to see everyone else, but it’s the same it always has been, it’s just that Pandora’s box has been opened.

Ah, I can see now that all the comments saying fandom has "always" been this bad are defining "always" as "for about 10 or 15 years" judging by their examples of bad past fandoms. That is not always. That's barely even the past. It hasn't been like this for most of modern fandom's existence.

I know there will inevitably be “fandom has always been shitty” but there is so much less “let live” in fandom spaces now.

There are literally people who don’t understand that reading fiction is not endorsing something in real life.

Purity culture is invading everywhere.

Just as everyone else has said; Yes. Fandom has always been like this.
But more than anything, it is also true that no matter how you dig, you'll always find shit in the end.

The platforms of today make it extraordinarily easy to pick and see the worst in people. If you get along with somebody, just take it as it is. Don't go looking into their dirty laundry because you'll always come across something you have issue with, no matter how clean they are/might seem to be.
To put it into perspective, I'm sure people read just as much into you. So, like, don't judge until you have to or whatever.

I think sometimes people like the idea of regressing and being child-like and taken care of even when they're adults so writing a character like that is partly wish fulfillment fantasy. Which is not to say that it makes for great characterization, IMO. I don't care much for it, either.

I feel this in my SOUL.
My fandoms tend to have characters who are mature adults and very successful high-stress jobs. Invariably, one of them will end up behaving like a the least mature teen in a high-school drama. Give me a break. The same person who canonically is trained to withstand torture and is invariably very direct about their attractions/likes/dislikes, etc, is NOT going to be reduced to tears in public when their crush appears to like somebody else. It's extremely prevalent in my fandoms to the point that I have an actual "never read" list of authors at this point so that I don't get tempted by what look like promissing blurbs.

Hate it, too. It FLOODS the hurt/comfort tag. What I'm looking for is stoic men who have seen some shit getting some highly-earned TLC and maybe some comforting/distracting sex. Not some woobified version of the stoic dude getting hot chocolate and hugs and a then a sex scene interspersed with highly stilted dialogue on boundaries and mental health. bleaaargh.

Oh christ yes, this shit is so prevelant in fandom and impossible to avoid and I hate it. I specifically don’t engage with stories about teenagers because I don’t find teenagers interesesting and yet every single time, in every single fandom: the adult characters will be written like 13 year olds and it’s maddening.

I like it, but it wasn't as memorable a piece of media in my childhood like it seems to have been for some of my friends. Artax never made me cry because little seven-year-old me just figured that yeah, makes sense to give up and die, same my brother. The "big, good, strong hands" scene does make me tear up, though.
