I'm down with an older batman being mean and tired with things. I would be too after decades of living in a place like Gotham with no real change happening. Shit still sucks!!!

I always saw this Bruce as a crotchety old grandpa/jaded Bruce to which Terry brings some hope/purpose to into his life again. I didn't realize it left such a long standing characterization (but also, Bruce was never a chill dude -- you'll see close to that in the web toon which is super cute).

It's almost harder to *not* have Bruce be a dickhead

Unfortunately, this characterization has persisted since the camp years. It's the farthest from being true, (while cuddly/snuggly Bruce is also completely inaccurate), but it's also the most popular opinion to oppose that ideal. As most, (if not all), comicbook writers choose their own origin/characterization as they go. (especially at this point. particularly with King or fuckall)
Freeze only has his characterization thanks to the Animated Series, after all. You're completely right though. People really need to differentiate between what is and what they want to be true, particularly in comic canon.
