I like it, but it wasn't as memorable a piece of media in my childhood like it seems to have been for some of my friends. Artax never made me cry because little seven-year-old me just figured that yeah, makes sense to give up and die, same my brother. The "big, good, strong hands" scene does make me tear up, though.

Oh man, the "big, good, strong hands" scene absolutely fucks me up. I'm not even a frequent crier, but if I think about it for more than a sec I get trembly.

as a horse-loving child, i got upset at that scene because i thought i watched a horse drown right in front of me. like i thought they literally killed a horse just to make a movie. as an adult i now know they only half-drowned the horse which is still upsetting in its own way because horses aren't meant to be dunked in mud over their head. i don't remember much else about this movie aside from the childlike empress who had great makeup and the flying dog-dragon which was neat.

I don’t like it, but I also didn’t see it until I was an adult. A moderately old adult, even. I’m guessing that makes a difference?

I’d be curious what the breakdown is for when someone first saw the movie vs whether they like it.

I have no real memories of this movie other than finding it boring tbh so yeah I agree that people get way up in arms if your experience of this movie doesn't line up with theirs.

Book is vastly superior

I think I must have been really young watching this because all I cared about as a kid was the dragon.

Me too. I loved the scene with the protagonist riding the dragon. Everything else? NOT IMPORTANT. ONLY DRAGON!!!
And maybe I was fascinated by the stone people? Were there any stone people there? I haven't watched this movie since the early 90s. Who knows!

I love the song, though. It's such a banger to sing along.

The most I know about this was from DDR, otherwise I just smiled and nodded along. People seemed really intense about this for a while though, so I got really good at smiling and nodding.
