Bill Watterson wasn't even an old man when he was doing Calvin and Hobbes, he was 27 when he started it and it ran for ten years

And the thing is, there are a lot of parts of modern life that actually are bullshit. It's hard to tell the difference sometimes between an old man yelling at clouds, and someone who is persnickety but basically annoyed at things that actually are bullshit. I think Watterson falls into the second category.

tbh anyone who would try to trap Bigfoot in the first place has already lost my respect for that on its own

Thank you for letting me finally put my finger on what has always annoyed me about Calvin and Hobbes. Like, I like the individual comics I've read fine enough, and some are quite nice, but overall I've never wanted to read more because I've got an overwhelming smug 'I am better than you uncultured idiots of the modern world' vibe from it, which also rubs me the wrong way.

I feel like you want an entirely different show than what these shows actually are, OP.

If I've learned anything about "folklore says" especially regarding cryptids, it's that folklore doesn't say. Aside from literal indigenous gods like the Thunderbird, claiming some Native American legend mentions X since the dawn of time is a lie - and worse, because it's capitalizing on the magical-savage trope, trying to add legitimacy to their story through an appeal to ancient mystery. That's why they don't talk to any actual indigenous people, because if they did they'd get no answers they can use. Same with the "ghost lights" caused by temperature inversions reflecting car headlights, every "oh but Native Americans have been seeing ghost lights here for centuries!" no, no they didn't. Contacting tribal leaders from any group that used to live there is the easiest debunk ever.

This is a particularly "Old man yelling at clouds" example you've picked, OP

Legal Eagle on youtube has a good video on it if you want another explainer that actually explains some of the legal issues at play: https://youtu.be/iZQJQYqhAgY

But otherwise, a lay DnDer probably just needs to know that WotC tried to screw over their fans in an effort to make more money and then had to backtrack when all its fans inevitably didn't like that. So, you know, just know that WotC are bastards, ie the status quo.

WotC had an agreement where you could write and sell content based on D&D - so for instance, if you were just some guy, you could write an adventure for D&D 5e and sell that adventure and keep the money without paying WoTC or having a commercial D&D license. Then they decided to unilaterally change that agreement (which they had said they would never do) to force more people to use commercial licenses instead.

Here we go again will forever be my favourite one of theirs :)

Nah. Calvin and Hobbes is just good stuff.

Hard agree.
