Bookmarks can be set to Private or Public. If you look at a general fic, the Private bookmarks won't show, not even in the numbers.

However, if you go to your personal Statistics page (you can find it on the left of your Author's page in the usual AO3 format) you'll get a rundown of Hits, Kudos, Subscribers, and Bookmarks - the full count. (It won't tell you who they are, but you will see how many.)
