Her “performance of conventional femininity” isn’t what she’s lauded for. She’s lauded for her song writing, her tireless work ethic, her business acumen, and her insistence on self-determination in an industry that is known for treating its top performers like golden geese.

I actually agree with you that her songs aren’t that deep. But I disagree with you that her song-writing ability is “somewhat above average.” That’s like saying Max Martin’s song-writing ability is somewhat above average, when the man has cranked out decades worth of hits like a soft-serve machine cranks out ice cream. In reality, both Taylor Swift and Max Martin are basically pop song writing geniuses. The fact that their songs usually aren’t that deep is neither here nor there. Depth isn’t the only metric by which a song-writer’s skill can be measured. And I say that as someone who tends to prefer “deep” indie shit over mainstream bops.
