Things that bug you in media you love?

Are there little things that just bug you in media you otherwise really love?

I was watching Rings of Power clips on Youtube and was reminded that honestly my biggest annoyance with the show is a tiny, petty one. Leaving aside the fact that for some reason male elves show their age (sort of) while female elves don't, which has always been annoying in Tolkien adaptions, it really gets to me that Celebrimbor looks and acts older than Galadriel. He's not. We don't know what exact year he was born in, but she's of his father's generation. It is fairly certain that she's quite a bit older than him, although both of them were probably born in Valinor (she was, he probably was).

I do enjoy the show, though it has issues. But this one thing just bugs me a lot.

1. Season 2 of Code Geass decides to bombard you with information that makes absolutely no sense in the first few episodes, because for some reason the show suddenly remembered a bunch of other stuff it wanted to introduce.

2. Detroit: Become Human is the dumbest, most inconsistent, and most tone-deaf piece of shit I've ever seen but I love it dearly because of all the worldbuilding potential.

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty has really pretty art but I don't like it as much as I would if it had the thick black lines I expect in comic art. It feels sketchy and soft. IDK, there is an inker credited but it reminds me of X-Treem X-Men.

The way Utena's big rebellious thing at the beginning is wearing a "boy's uniform." It's not a boy's uniform! It's a student council uniform shirt (which is unisex; Juri wears one) in black with short shorts and that no boy would ever wear. It wouldn't bother me if she got yelled at for breaking the dress code, but the way everyone pointedly says it's a boy's uniform is what bugs the hell out of me.

Still sad that of the seven immortal anthropomorphic personification siblings in The Sandman, only Despair is fat. It doesn't help that I could cosplay the Netflix version of Despair with zero effort.

It would be so easy to make less awful, too. In the comics she was always fat (and naked) but in the show they could just have Despair show up during a famine/when someone is starving as a scrawny sack of bones and hair.

Then its less fat=universally the most shitty depressing thing to be and more "being fat in the modern western world is seen as horrible."

TFW you binge a badfic because it has your OTP and you're desperate

(Anonymous) 2023-02-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Y’all ever find yourself reading a really bad longfic because you’re desperate for content for your OTP/fave. And with each successive chapter you’re like, “I am literally eating out of the dumpster, oh god, am I even enjoying this? I must be, otherwise I wouldn’t still be reading, right? This was probably written by someone in high school, am I honestly going to continue? Yes, yes, apparently I am.”

That’s what I’m doing with my afternoon.

I currently have thirty more chapters of hot, juicy garbage left to go. I either regret nothing or everything-- hard to say which.

This is me trying to get into first person fic because one of the most prolific writers for a pairing I like writes first person POV. I just can't.

Yes I love it. It's such a fun little game to play with yourself of seeing how long you're willing to tolerate the poor quality just for your fave

And also those kinds of fics do genuinely have positive qualities, they're usually very straightforward and unashamed about being pander-y and giving you what you want to see in a pairing. It's just a question of how long you can put up with the writing quality.

I wish I had a new 100-chapter longfic for my OTP to read right now tbh.

Yup. I have read every single fic on AO3 for my two OTPs. At this point even the modern world AUs, even though I hate that genre.

As someone who reads fic based on kinks, this is my ordinary experience. Though I was happy to read one longfic in particular because it was more focused on the drama of the plot more than anything. But eventually I stopped because the writer decided to spend two entire chapters on the villain getting sexually assaulted as an explanation as their sympathetic backstory. I should probably check and see if the author managed to get past that, and if they concluded the story yet.

I did this in the past. Because... goddamnit, it sure as hell wasn't my NOTP.

I would do anything for love (of my OTP)... but I won't do that. Nope, nope, nope.

yes, and there's a large part of me that does enjoy badfic like that. like i need to scratch a "confused laugh" emotional itch.

Worse than that. I refuse to read badfic as it taints my faves in my head so I would rather WRITE self-indulgent badfic.

Yes, I've done this for kink content.

The most memorable one wasn't even kinky, it was just kink-adjacent, so the author probably didn't even want my sort reading it.

It had everything: modern world AU, wildly off characterisation, romantic dramas for incredibly stupid reasons, every other cast member getting into a m/m relationship no matter how bizarre the pairings were objectively, an evil ex, an evil mother in law, and approximately 3 gazillion chapters.

Oh gods, I kind of want to read it again.

Oh yeah, totally.. completely. There's one fic where I forgot how badly it was written and I realize my brain does this thing where it autocorrects EVERYTHING I'm seeing wrong with that fic. And when I'm done, I'm like, damn that was pretty good! When I return months later for an update or just to revisit, I'm slapped with a wtf was this trash and omg how did I manage to get through and ENJOY this. I think an anon up thread made a great point about there being enough positive elements in the fic to hold you.

There have been one or two that aside from the poor writing and characterization, I just couldn't. I really couldn't. And the idea wasn't half bad! But goodness that execution. If we were dumpster diving, this was far too beyond the expiration date for me to consider consumption.

I have been known to binge badly written fanfic with google translate in a language I don't speak. And you can also often enough tell when it's translation issue and when it's not a good writer issue

Yeah, I'm reading Google Translated stories now, the drought is real.

Otoh, I clicked on a long fic with a sus summary out of desperation and was rewarded by a real gem from a genuinely talented ESL writer. Wish I hadn't stumbled on it 5 years too late or I'd offer to edit the story for them. Never say never.

Headscratchers

Have you ever come across any form of content that has you going What is even happening here?

This is the question I find myself asking as I poke around Scott Shafer's YouTube channel. I've watched a video or two of his, and while he seems to have some research chops, the aesthetic choices for the thumbnails and set strike me as really, really odd. Frankly, I don't know what to make of it.

(If you're curious about this for whatever reason, you can go check it out for yourself here: https://www.youtube.com/@ShaferScott)

I just watched The School of Good and Evil for work (it's a long story, don't ask), and the ONLY way I can explain that movie is that it was made by a bunch of frustrated costume designers with blackmail material. Cause that movie is just pure wut.

Many times. Latest: when I stumbled across the PC-88 version of Princess Tomato in Salad Kingdom. As you can guess by the name NES version was bad enough. But the PC-88. Ohh boy.

Most consistently, Pete Wentz 2005ish Livejournal entries. What was even that? ART

Legend of Korra Update

(Anonymous) 2023-02-16 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Mako is still The Worst (TM)

Asami conveniently kisses him (tbf he did state he and Korra were through) and he just lets it happen. Had you no feelings, boy? Wtf. Ugh. Can't stand him. I'd say Asami was being shady, but it's not like she and Korra are even friends.

Also, continuing with Mako beingba little turd -- he's discovered the plot by Varrick (I too was bamboozled, despite the fact numerous times he's let ppl know who he is, essentially calling the masses lemmings that need direction) AND he doesn't stop Asami from signing over a healthy share of her family's company. She was only half way signing when he dropped in. Then he's fool enough to announce he's close to proving it..ugh.
