I'm in the Markiplier ego fandom where there's a character called Darkiplier.
and a big portion of shippy fics has the other character love-interest calling him 'Darky' - which in addition to 'no way would that be his nickname wtf'; being from England that rings sirens in my head because that's a racial slur where I'm from (I haven't brought it up in the fandom space I frequent because the majority of people there are American and I'm assuming that its not a thing so I've kept quiet about it).

Seconding the other anon, that's a hundo-bundo percent a racial slur in the US too. (I'm in the Midwest, for reference.) 😬

It's usually spelled "darkie" but yeah... that's a racial slur in the U.S. A rather old-fashioned one, but a racial slur nonetheless. Yikes.
