I swear to God, if I read one more fic where the characters have literal magic levels of gaydar, I will....

Do nothing and keep reading it, probably. It's not that big of a deal. But I am very annoyed.

Seriously feel yah. I get annoyed enough by people who think they have infallible gaydar in *real life*. People don't always fit in lil' boxes, mistakes can happen, communication is the best way to avoid hurt feelings. See also: knowing if someone is/isn't into you, regardless of orientation(s) involved.

Absolutely!

As in, straight characters that just magically know they're talking to a gay person, and treat their impression like it must be 100% true? Or gay characters that never have to spend half a second figuring out if that person they're attracted to would be cool with it or into them? As a narrative pattern, that does sound annoying.

The second one! Gay characters just immediately knowing every other gay person - both love interests, and also just friends.

And yeah, a lot of the reason it bugs me is because it's just so repetitive.

DA This happens in a lot of canons now, too. I know some things just don't want a subplot about worrying about homophobia or incompatible orientations, but they should have the character's love interest be vocally out of the closet (or at least have them wear a rainbow pin or something) so that we know how the character knows they have a chance.

This reminded me of an older fic I read some time ago, where a character who has just met the protagonists asks one of them if another of them is into guys, so that he can know if it's worth shooting his shot or not. It's occurring to me now that you don't actually see that kind of thing very often in fics.
