you know, it's not gatekeeping to be critical about how pop stars market themselves.

like sure maybe magazines and in his artistic product like albums and on stage are the only places harry styles feels comfortable exploring himself. it's perfectly possible he feels uncomfortable doing so otherwise, it's not even uncommon.

but it's definitely a function of his artistic persona, that's actually for certain, and i don't think people have to pretend differently when talking about it.

to girls who wouldn't be into guys like he is now.
literally nobody who knows one direction fans would ever think this

thus don't need to heap on praise that makes it into mainstream discourse.
this is a weird thing to say. the queer community isn't making any mainstream moves on their own social power and neither are any "gatekeepers" in it. if someone is getting mainstream praise while people openly in the queer community for whom this isn't a "new special thing" are getting shit on, which they are, or even when it is a "new special thing," which they are, it's not because the former's fans are loud, it's because the former isn't doing anything the mainstream feels threatened by or they fit a particular niche that the mainstream is eager to fill precisely so they don't have to pay attention to any more provocative artists, and frankly it's a good idea to talk about that dichotomy, because it happens for more artists than just Harry Styles.
