I think obsession with crime, violent crime, murder, murder victims, etc is more or less a constant in society

"True crime" is one particular instantiation of that - the idea of organizing all of that stuff into the specific genre of true crime is a new way of presenting that information - but that's the only part of it that's new.

Yeah, I don't think a fascination with morbid things and crime is a recent trend. People wrote murder ballads, they made plays based on lurid crimes, hell, people used to go to public executions and take home souvenirs.
