I hate Secret Agent Man for exactly this reason. Are you the secret agent, or is he telling you about the secret agent?

for Secret Agent Man, it's quite clear that he's doing apostrophe

Hell yes, opinions about pronouns that are interesting!

But specifically I've never noticed this. I just don't pay much attention to music lyrics, but that is really crappy consistency now that it has been pointed out to me.

Hmm, the things about lyrics like this to me is that they always make me wonder if that's a mistake, or a choice. That is if the songs are meant to have secret meanings behind the surface. Regardless of what I have to say about post-Songs About Jane Maroon 5 that album was (a favorite and) very coherent. But the odd usage of pronouns in not all songs makes me feel like some songs are NOT only about Jane, or maybe are about past x present.

Lol a few months ago I did share my annoyance at MGK's my ex's best friend which has a similarly odd usage of pronouns. It's confusing, and annoying. But I like when it's not just meant to be confusing but an actual figure of speech I guess

I have to admit that I laughed a little at the fact that the secret includes a chart demonstrating that OP actually meant 2nd and 3rd person pronouns, not 1st and 2nd person pronouns

Comment OP

This was made in the Secrets You Don't Wanna Make thread so I'm glad the secret maker was able to explain to me what I was actually talking about lol

I've always had a love/hate relationship with song lyrics because stuff like THIS happens and it completely throws me out because THAT'S NOT COHERENT STOP IT.

Yeah, this bugs me too. It doesn't bug me to distraction, most of the time, but I definitely have moments where I'm like, wait, is "you" also "she"? Or are you talking to one person and about another?

It didn't bug me in songs because usually there is a blurred line where a song is half about a fictional character and half sung to the audience as if they are that character (or sung in a way that lets the audience become one with the narrator), and that, you know, works for songs.

Plus I refuse to believe in a world where either 'you were a fast machine' or 'she shook me all night long' are better lyrics.

I got yelled at for singing Hugh shook me all night long....

(Anonymous) 2023-02-24 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I like to pretend they're about different people, sometimes as a contrast, sometimes as a rebuke! So "She was a fast machine" BUT "you shook me all night long" even though you are not a fast machine!
