I love comments as much as the next author. But an A/N begging me to read the fic and then telling me to leave comments just puts me right off.

I've noticed a lot of A/N lately, sweetly and sometimes not so sweetly asking for comments. IDK, I always figured if someone likes my fic enough to leave a comment, they'll leave one whether I remind them about it or not. But maybe I'm an Old who's just out of touch.

I have a kneejerk negative reaction to it sometimes, but these days some people might feel like they have to seem openly friendly and receptive about comments because some people are so nervous about “doing it wrong” or not having anything smart enough to say. As comments are waning in a lot of fandoms there’s almost more of a spotlight on you when you do comment. But when it’s very preachy and demanding it definitely puts me off.

I'm also an Old but I don't mind if someone's like "If you enjoyed, please leave kudos or a comment" or "kudos/comments will be loved". Lots of people, especially young fans, haven't come from a community fandom culture and don't necessarily think it's ok to do that - I had one person leave a nice comment with some speculation about where the plot was going then apologising for "being in my space"!

Yeah, I have seen some people acting afraid of inconveniencing the author or coming off as weird or stalkerish for going back and commenting on old fics, etc. Or straight up saying they don't know what kind of things to say in a comment. As if we don't treasure every comment in a hoard like dragons!

Yeah, got into writing fanfics a couple years ago and getting any comment in a lot of fandoms is like winning the lottery. Very few get it and when they do it seems like the only ones to get any comments at all are the same handful of writers/fics.

But I suppose some people feel scared to comment, either because they think the author will not see/reply or they're afraid they're going to be forced to reply or something? Like IDK, I thought I was socially awkward but with the ways people act now in fandoms IDK if my social awkwardness is way off that I don't realize how awkward I am or other people got way different social anxieties from me. Either way, continuing to work on not basing the values of my life/character on the reception my fics get (or don't get).
