Like the above commenter, I didn't get that message at all from Hercules. His previous victories were done to show off for an audience and earn his place in a society that had previously rejected him. His sacrifice for Meg was wholly ego free, he didn't care then about being a hero in the eyes of others which in turn ironically made him a hero.

Speaking of Disney, Kingdom Hearts 3 is pretty fucked up in the moral department.

Expanding a bit philosophically, Hercules surrendered his humanity/mortality (ego) for enlightenment/godhood (and became a true hero).

This. The point was that all of his previous heroics had been something he was doing for himself and his own personal gain, whereas he was willing to give something up for Meg's sake and THAT was what made him a hero.
