Not really. The distinction is that asking people not to distribute or alter and distribute your actual work is reasonable - it's fine for an author to want to retain some control over where their work appears. Asking people not to talk about it in certain places is not reasonable because the author isn't asking to control their work, they're trying to control other peoples' thoughts about the work as well as other peoples' behavior. The author is not entitled to control the discussion and dissemination of other peoples' opinions even if it's about that work. Incidentally, this is generally how it works for published fiction as well. I cannot under U.S. law take the text of the latest NYT bestseller, print it out and distribute it elsewhere (even if I do so for free!) because it's not my work. I'd be violating copyright law and their publisher could quite rightfully sue me for that. But if I wrote an essay discussing the writing, themes, etc. in that bestseller, that's my work and I can post it wherever I like, including social media. The author does not have control over my work or my opinions or my social media activity, just like I don't have control over their work or their opinions or their social media activity. It's pretty simple, really.

This is why the author is getting some side eye from people who understand that authors who try to control their readers' reactions and discussion are letting it slip that they're not entirely rational and a little control freaky.

I take the distinction.

I personally would think of it less as an attempt to control the thoughts of others, and more as a polite request. And making polite requests of others, which we can't enforce but would like them to follow anyway, just seems like a natural part of society to me, not something that's control freaky.

But YMMV.

A list of demands doesn’t become less demanding because you bulleted the list with “please.”

And prefacing an unreasonable demand like “don’t ever talk or write about my work anywhere outside of my immediate control” with “please” definitely doesn’t make it polite or reasonable. It’s just adding a layer of passive-aggression to the unreasonable demand.
