OK but like... a lot of English dubs are just bad even as English-language voice-acting. It's not just that they aren't doing a good job of capturing the emotional content of the original; it's that they aren't doing a good job of transmitting emotion through speech the way it is normally done in English.

(Also this is as much about dubbing from French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and whatever other languages as it is from Japanese)

Exactly. Compared to the Japanese dubbing, I have found that English dubs just don't sound anywhere near as emotional when by rights they really should. It's not just about the ability to scream (that was merely an extreme example on my part). Like the poster above noted, it all just seems flatter.

And if it was straight up a cultural tone issue, then American media would always come off as flatter to me than Japanese media, and it doesn't. It's like a lot of American voice actors don't actually know how to... act... with their voices.

(Also, there ARE some excellent American dubs of Japanese media that don't come off flatter, but they are few and far between.)
