I'm down for most fantasy. ASOIAF didn't work for me both because of the rampant child rape and because of the viewpoint switching. I'm down with "realism" but ASOIAF was just dark, not realistic. Then again, I did find GOT way more enjoyable. But some of the characters were aged up, which worked better for me.

Also didn't like Assassin's Apprentice (didn't read any further in the series) because first person just doesn't work for me.

Is Assassin's Apprentice the one where the POV character got about 3 hours of sleep a night for years on end while he was learning his trade - with no ill effects whatsoever? Yeah, bounced hard off that one.
