I had a problem with the "there are dragons" Temeraire books regarding this with sexism. Sexism is a thing except that women can be soldiers because there's a type of dragon that only bonds with women, but nobody knows about this except the people who work with them. The main guy finds out and shrugs it off with "well I guess it's ok that women can be soldiers then, nbd" even though even a decent person in that era would probably react to the sudden revelation that the military was using female soldiers with the same shock and concern that a decent person today would react to learning that their military is using child soldiers. While all the Bad People who know are very sexist about female soldiers, because they're Bad. Ugh.

Laurence *was* shocked. And befuzzled. And confusticated. He floundered when talking with the young woman captain, and that he got on easily with Captain Roland had more to do with her bulldozer personality than him.

I mean. He got used to it. He respected the women in the officer corps. But he also literally hired a chaperone when Emily reached a certain age, because he had not entirely accepted the social mores of his new service.
