Not at all, just the specific interest social groups are much, much bigger. I was in pre-internet Doctor Who fandom and I assure you there were plenty of dysfunctional assholes then too. Just if a million people can access your meta about the TARDIS all at once, that's a bit different to 50 people who read the club magazine and a few more who got copies from a friend of a friend years later.
