They've done reworks to some of the older dungeons so that you can go in alone, but it's not overall yet sadly, they're working on it because there are people like you who'd rather do it alone than go in with a team. One of my in-game friends did it this way and he had a lot of fun. I'm quite happy to do stuff with others, especially as I have others to play with, but I get that not everyone wants to deal with it or deal with the stress of potential toxic idiots.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by the early dungeons letting me use NPCs, but now I'm far enough that I can't advance without doing a series of quests that not only can't be done with NPCs, but you need three teams of 8 players each. -_-

It's not that I'm worried about other people being toxic so much as frankly I have no sense of direction and get lost in dungeons, and everyone else seems to know the mechanics already so they just rush through - and I don't have the time to take a step back and see attack patterns and features of the battlefield and so on, so I wind up not doing something that everyone else knows to do and dying from an avoidable insta-kill attack and feeling dumb.

It's just me being worried about letting people down. It was bad enough when it was 3 other people, now it's 23 other people. :P

One of my mutuals who plays this game talked about going into a bossfight he hadn’t done before. (Googling, I think it was Alexander - The Fist of the Sun.) One of the other players told him “Remember, when he gets huge, you need to turn into a bird.” Then they started the fight, and he had to figure out what “turn into a bird” even meant.

Hahahah, yeah. I've had a couple friends who played with me on some of the battles, and actually EXPLAINED what I was supposed to do before we went into the battle, which was great because I knew what to look for. But then other times, someone would say like "grab the orb" in the middle of the battle and by the time I figured out where the orb was and was on my way to it, the attack it mitigated had already gone off. :P

On the other hand there was another battle where the boss was clearly charging up, and someone said "stand in it" and fortunately I managed to figure out what they meant when I realized everyone was suddenly crowded together. And had no idea why they wanted me to do that because nothing much seemed to happen. Later found out that the more people are within a certain area for that attack, the less damage it does, and that was WHY nothing seemed to happen.

....And I can honestly say I have no idea what "turn into a bird" would mean either, and I've been playing for about three months. That sounds like a very strange battle, but uh. I guess if I ever get that far I will probably remember that advice specifically because of how nonsensical it sounds. :D

But even when I do know the mechanics, sometimes it's just so crowded with everyone's flashy attacks going at once that I can't see enough to figure out what's actually happening. Ugh I hate the multiplayer aspect. I like being able to play games at my own speed - and if I mess up, I don't want it to affect anyone else.

If you’re having trouble figuring out what’s going on amid all the Christmas light vomit, you can turn off “show effects for party members” and it should make the screen much more legible for you.
A lot of people turn off this option.

I have a lot of trouble understanding the MMO hate - trying and failing a fight alone, over and over and over, is for me a much more joy killing experience than having a crowd of people to follow and get the gist of things from.

I do get feeling a lot of pressure not to mess up, and I want to encourage new players to (adjusts glasses) simply fuck up anyway. People being shitty about it are basement dwellers and anyone living above ground will be happy to offer you a helpful correction, the community is exceptionally good for this.

In my late teens and early 20s I was a hardcore world of warcraft raider dating another raider and she was adamant that by virtue of joining the raid you owed other players “optimal play” (ie, knowledge of mechanics, not only appropriate but exceptional gear, etc”). This is bullshit! People looking for that kind of progression experience should join a static group and temper their expectations in the duty finder, the point of which is to find an instance quickly to advance the story.

Anyway - I love FFXIV, and I hope that more people play it, but if interacting with people online activates you or makes you nervous I think you’re right to enjoy it from the sidelines. If you’re playing but not enjoying your experience in duty finder, I would recommend finding a free company dedicated to teaching new players (you can ask in new players chat) and or, the better recommendation, use party finder instead to find players who specifically opt into explaining and going slowly.

All best!

I have a lot of trouble understanding the MMO hate - trying and failing a fight alone, over and over and over, is for me a much more joy killing experience than having a crowd of people to follow and get the gist of things from.

I think that right there is EXACTLY one of the reasons I hate the multiplayer aspects. I personally find a lot more fulfillment from gaming by messing around and trying things until I find a solution, so having people TELL me what to do makes it much less fun. (But if they don't, I could mess it up for everyone, so it's necessary.) Like, I was one of those people who wouldn't look at an FAQ for a game until I'd tried different things and failed for a couple of days - and usually this worked well because I was so satisfied when I figured it out. So we just approach games differently and get different things out of it, and that's okay.

Also in my case there's the whole thing where I am awkward and not a people person and minimize interactions with random people I don't know when they're not necessary in real life too. It kinda sucks when something that has traditionally been "a fun escape from dealing with people, that I can do myself on my own time without interruption" suddenly becomes another situation where I feel like an awkward turtle just for, for instance, last night, farming FATEs for atmas and someone else is running around hitting all the FATEs in the area too and I have no idea if my involvement might be depriving them of something or if I'm helping them do whatever they're doing faster because they haven't said a word. :P Meanwhile if this wasn't an MMO I could just do whatever I want and not worry that I'm ruining it for someone.

[Edit: Yeah and a friend who was doing stuff with me did explain when I mentioned it you can turn off other player attack effects and that will help with making Syrcus Tower less stressful I think. The previous Crystal Tower thing I just was confused the whole entire time and my heart was pounding from anxiety over not being able to even follow the instructions my friend gave me beforehand because I couldn't see what was happening. But I am still procrastinating because I dread it so much. On the bright side, 7 of the 12 atmas I need for my Gae Bolg already since like 9pm yesterday, so procrastinating can still be productive. XD]

If you're worried about not knowing the mechanics of a fight, just say "Hey, first time here, could I get a rundown?" Veterans generally don't offer mechanics instructions unprompted because most newbies like to go into things blind and try to figure it out on their own, but I've never seen people refuse to explain things if someone asks.

Yeah, that's what I do, while the opening cut scene starts I can't even watch it because I'm quickly typing "hi all, first time, let me know if there's something I need to do or not do"... but I really WOULD rather go into it blind, which I can't do without potentially messing up other people's experience or slowing them down. Thus I don't like the multi-player aspect. I want to be free to mess up until I figure it out myself without affecting other people. :P

That's really the core of it. I don't want my style of gaming to negatively impact anyone else who has a different style of gaming, and when I'm forced to play with other people, I therefore can't relax and enjoy the game.
