i always wonder if people actually believe the philosophical and moral stuff they've made up to justify their ship or if they're just willing to say anything because they think it's persuasive. i don't think there's any good reason to go general, it's considerably less annoying, purely opinion-based and significantly less assailable to say i think these two characters would re-traumatize each other, but nope, there's always a shipper to say it's about real world dynamics. for what?

I think it's mostly this. In shipping arguments, and in all other online arguments. People will grasp on to any convenient argument to justify the position they've already decided they agree with. You see it over and over and over and over and over. People just say whatever.
