(Anonymous) 2023-03-18 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)It's funny because apparently immigrant Asian laborers used actual snake oil to treat pains from overworking just like they did in their countries, then some disgusting US salesmen started selling mineral oil claiming that it was snake oil (probably thinking something along the lines of "it's placebo anyways, whatever works for those chinks") and that it would cure Anything and that's how it was.
Meanwhile "snake oil" is just, well, snake-based oil to people like me who live in places where snakes are common (way more than I would like - ugh) and works as a topical analgesic just as much as, say, camphor (Vicks Vaporub etc) or ice (except it doesn't burn, unless you're allergic, or melt while you're applying it). It's not going to cure bursitis though, just alleviate the pain (good luck with that surgery).
