Jeez. Sorry your mom was so judgemental of stuff you liked, OP.

Dang, my mom definitely pulled some crap on me when I was a "gifted kid" but at least she never did that. (Actually supported my interest in comics because hey, "talented artist" and "talented writer" are both things I was supposed to be and comics hit on both topics!)

And the turtles are just fantastic as an example of how even when you intentionally start something out to be ridiculous, if you do it well enough, it can be both ridiculous AND awesome. Love that you used panels from the super old original Eastman/Laird for this too :D

My mom sounds similar to your mom. It might have helped that I was a younger sibling, but I dealt with it by rebelling by looking the air she said was lowbrow or whatever. And somehow I still have a functional brain and discerning judgment as an adult. FU, mom, lol.

I used to have these comics too, heh. People who are judgy as fuck about others' taste are insufferable.

Oh, hello, we must be siblings! I was very into all kinds of comics, including TMNT, as a teenager and my mother was horrified at me "wasting" my time on them. I'm not really a TMNT fan anymore but they were my gateway into Daredevil, so thanks, Turtles!

Sorry that your mom was like that. My much older sister (mid-teens when I was born) used to run down some of my interests (still does, actually), and I know it feels terrible. You're so right, many forms of entertainment have value, and I think it's good to have variety.
