Yup, that was great. As a person who loathed their periods and was happy to have a hysterectomy, I'm happy not to dwell on it too much, but i would not mind at all having it being a normal part of everyday *stuff* in any post-apocalyptic story.

What was un-great and irritating as fuck were all the fanboys whinging on about how gross/unnecessary/whatever it all was AND being all pissy when they paraded their utter ignorance of menstruation before other fans.

I'm not in that fandom, but it's tiresome in general when grown ass men act like they might be infected with horrible girl cooties if they absorb even ONE IOTA OF INFORMATION on how periods work. It's absolutely nuts, half the planet's population have to deal with periods, a lot of you plan on dating/marrying women, a lot of you will be fathers to female children and you STILL want to act like menstruation is icky and embrace your own ignorance on the subject.

Right? It's so FUCKING ridiculous and just...grotesque.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Men are fucking DUMB. They really are the inferior sex most of the time.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-19 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't live in the US and while the subject of menstration isn't quite as despised by grown men here(there are still some that are Weird about it) I've still had to inform a disturbing number of adult men about how vaginas and periods work in general, like these guys are likely going to date someone who'll experience this and they just don't bother to learn???

Though for the more well-meaning guy-friends of mine it was funny to watch their faces morph into horror as they fully grasped just what is going on with us each month and their compassion levels went through the roof for both me and their future wives. Like yes it really does suck and it's no wonder our chill levels go down the toilet during the first few days, lmao.

The ones who refuse to learn about it and act like a - it's too gross for words and b - we're all lying about how it feels/fucks with us make me furious.

I do love a guy who actually takes the literal 10 minutes to learn something and then actually has empathy. I've even seen some posts from guys/their family about them carrying period supplies at school for emergencies for their girl buddies. That is just awesome! (But fucking ridiculous that schools don't just HAVE THE STUFF for their students.)

My dad was born in 1946. He was always supportive and happy to get me period supplies, no big deal. He was also the only man at his workplace willing to take on the first female apprentice who ever applied and she later told him she knew he would be okay because he made sure there were period supplies in the first aid cabinet.

Awww, good on him!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand men that refuse to learn about it.
If they're attracted to biological women they're going to have to learn when it's safer to have sex so there's less of a chance of getting their wives/girlfriends preggers, even with condoms.

I don't get it, either, especially when they act like it's the plague and leprosy all rolled into one.

I feel like a big part of the problem is that it's so totally individualized. Like, my periods honestly don't "suck" at all? I need tampons for about 48 hours and that's it, then they're pretty much done. I've never once had cramps in my life so I genuinely can't understand what people are talking about when they complain about having horrible cramps. I also can't understand being worried about bleeding everywhere or leaking because my periods have never ever been like that.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
but at least you aren't denying that other people have periods like the ones you've never experienced and that it's different for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, same. My periods are super light, super short, and painless. I do get kinda sad sometimes, and occasionally I have trouble sleeping for a night, but that's about it.

I definitely don't doubt that the symptoms other people describe are real. They're just not universal.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. I may get moody for a couple of days and sometimes I'll have insomnia for a night or two but that's about it as far as annoying symptoms go.

I get that other women experience other things but I simply can't relate because I literally don't even know what cramps are supposed to feel like. Are they like a stomachache?

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
DA.

For me cramps feel like there's a fist in my abdomen constantly pushing in and twisting, at worst they feel like someone's stuck two hot metal rods into my pelvis and are slowly prising it apart.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Cramps are pretty individual, too. Mine feels like a heavy, hot rock in my lower abdomen that's a dull, tight ache. What's worse is that it frequently comes with nausea - the simultaneous feeling of "I think I'm going to throw up" (but I don't) and "I think I'm about to have the emergency shits". I've tried painkillers, but they really only take the edge off. Usually I just have to wait it out, which is about an hour or two. The cramps usually hit me in the morning and again late at night, but it can come any time.

I rarely got period cramps before my 30s, but now the whole period experience starts a week before the bleeding with cramps and occasional diarrhea. Then it's 2-3 days of light bleeding followed by 2 days of heavy bleeding where I'll have to change pads every 2 hours or so andovernight means doubling up on the most absorbent tampon + thick overnight maxi pad with wings, largest size for maximum coverage and that's STILL no guarantee against leaks. Followed by 2-3 days of light bleeding.

Seems like that varies as well. The very rare occasion where I've felt pain during my period, it's been a very sharp lancing pain that's there and then gone in an instant, occurring three or four times throughout the day.

Mine were a constant, burny-stabby ache across my lower back that got worse the longer I sat in like a chair or something. They only eased up when I got to lay flat on my back for a few hours, so school *sucked*. I even ended up going home a couple of times, because my back hurt so bad, sitting at a desk was intolerable. They usually stopped after a couple days, regardless of how long my actual period lasted.

I also had some pretty heavy times when my guts felt really tender and achy and, getting up from the couch, for instance, I'd suddenly feel that 'rush' of hot/wet and realize that I'd just bled all down my friggin' leg. Whee!

A huge issue with this being such an individual experience is that a lot of women themselves tend to think "it's like this for me so it must be this way for every other woman". Which results in shit like female obgyns who, even though they should know better, tell their patients who come in for severe period cramps "don't be such a baby, I go through it as well and it's not that bad" and don't even stop to consider it may be different for the patient.

It's hilarious to me that a large amount of men/boys will happily and publicly discuss their dicks, balls, bowel movements and masturbation habits, but the second they hear any vague mention of menstruation it turns into "whoa WHOA, GROSS, TMI, put that under a cut ffs, I WAS EATING"

My partner works in a largely male-staffed kitchen and the stuff they talk about while working is on another level.

Oh dear gods, this. The number of times I have VERY UNWILLINGLY been subjected to men discussing the last time they pooped, what it was like, how it smelled, the color, the size.....
FUCK ME.

I made it a point to discuss 'period stuff' around those guys, because I'm petty like that.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you or some other woman in their lives counters with stories about how big of a blood clot they pass during menstruation, after childbirth, etc. the wobbly jello consistency, how they had to stomp it down the bathtub drain, etc. I would totally do this if I had to listen to peoples' poop stories.

Ooh, yeah, all the graphic, gross, bloody, fucked-up shite we could think of, about periods and childbirth and all of it. Fuckers.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-20 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so many just discuss that stuff so casually and it's just like ??? I worked with someone once who gleefully sprang a graphic video on me of his friend drunk-puking and I was just like WHY ARE YOU SHOWING ME THIS

Apparently it was hilarious and I just didn't get it

Right? Fucking gross.
My mom always said that bodily functions were normal and natural and everyone had them, but nobody wants to HEAR ABOUT YOURS, which is oh so true.
