I don't know this particular thing, but I know the feeling from other fandoms.
You're sitting there, shipping your ship you 100% know will not be canon or enjoy interactions between actors in a jokingly "they're totally boyfriends" way (look, BL shows want us to do that and sometimes I enjoy the chemistry) and one day you look up and realise that so many people around you are DEAD SERIOUS about it!?

Oh no, OP, I've been in that awkward situation too, with things that are clearly bullshit but are fun ideas to play with, when I suddenly found myself surrounded by people who really believed them. In my case though, they had some other really bad ideas too (Why are so many paranormal fans conservative anti-Semitic homophobic assholes?) and it stopped being fun for me. :(

True crime, too. I would love to find a true crime podcast with liberal hosts, but the genre in general seems to be full of right wingers.

I don’t pretend to know why, but every conspiracy theory picks up antisemites. David Icke’s lizard people weren’t even Jewish, and you get anti-Jewish folks talking about lizard people. Flat Earthers think Jews are covering up Flat Earth. Even anti-Muslim stuff gets anti-Jewish on the side.

Watched one of these 411 shows, it was so fake we just laughed at it. That people believe, or want to believe this stuff is weird.

I think people get pulled in by the ~~*~~mystery~~*~~ and the fact that the guy who does it very purposefully pulls stuff out of context and blows it out of proportion. Like, it's not weird that people go missing in national parks. They tend to be acres of wilderness, full of large, predatory animals and other dangerous features, and they're visited by millions of tourists who are frequently ill equipped and unfamiliar with the dangers. Even people who ARE used to being outdoors and navigating wild places can have accidents, and it doesn't require much of a slip up to really put your life in danger. Slipping off a rock and breaking your leg in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, for example.

And then there's the whole "Ssssshhhh it's totally Bigfoot you guys" thing, which is nuttier than squirrel poop, but there you go.

It sounds like some of your enjoyment is coming from the fact that it is presented like it is real, and that other people (some of who presumably believe it's real) add research/ theories to the fandom that treat it is as real

And presumably this also would be less interesting to you if it was a work of fiction.

Like, you can't have it both ways. If you want the enjoyment of the verisimilitude you have to put up with the true believers - and if there were no true believers it wouldn't be as fun a pool to play in

I haven't had this exact experience but I hate it when "In Jokes" escape containment.
