AYRT was asking for it with that question, but their underlying point stands, which is that gen M/F friendship isn't what the vast majority of fanfic readers are primarily looking for from their fanfic.

Nah, not really asking for it. AYRT is lying lmao. (Gasp! Can people really just do that? Go on the internet and tell lies?) Nobody looks for fic about any combination of genders being friends. There's genfic, but that's not specifically about friendship. If it contains friendships, they're incidental to the real subject of the fic.

I've looked for fics about characters being friends because I wanted to read fic about those characters being friends. Most recently it was Robin and Steve from Stranger Things because I love their friendship and I wanted to read fic about it, the same way I would with a ship. It's not that complicated.

Dude, you don't speak for everyone. I would love more friendship fic, but I pretty much never find it in my fandoms. I've read a total of like...two, that I can think of, and only one that was any good. I probably would like it more than ship fic honestly because I'm super picky when it comes to romance and don't like the way a lot of it is written.
