There's a difference between "not attractive" and "grotesque"

........um, yes?
I didn't say he was grotesque, and I don't think the character in the movie was grotesque, either.

I mean, I think that's the criticism that people are making: their problem is not that he's unattractive, it's that they think he's depicted as grotesque.

Hrmmmmmmmm.

Well, I dunno. I mean, the fat suit thing was a little weird. And yes, he did have moments where his actions were hard to watch. BUT.
He was a severely depressed man who was basically, maybe even consciously, killing himself by overeating and not seeing a doctor, etc. I think some of his *actions* could have been considered grotesque, because it was disturbing to see someone do that to themselves, but I think the character was very sad and sympathetic.

NA - I just want to say that I appreciate reading your comments ITT. I can't actually say for sure whether I'd agree with you or not because I haven't seen the movie, but I don't think your POV is unreasonable and I appreciate the alternative perspective.

Ta, Anon!
It's on fmovies, so it's free if you want to give it a try, but if you don't, that's cool, too.

I think the depiction can be sympathetic, and also still grotesque and problematic! Those things can coexist. I don't think that the character being sad automatically makes it better.

Not *better*, but certainly more empathetic. You can't help but see this character's deep, unresolved pain and loss and really wish better things for him; a relationship with his daughter, recognition as a good teacher, etc.

I'm very sorry to tell you this but people this far into being morbidly obese do in general look kinda grotesque.
