Not an expert but pretty sure you just mentally insert your name where relevant. Which is far too much multitasking for my little brain and rockets me straight out of my immersion, I forever see it as yes/no and feel like I'm filling out a form.

The original idea really was that you were supposed to actually insert your name - download the fic to a word processor and literally find/replace y/n with your name. That's why the choice of placeholder is so off-putting, it's supposed to be something easy to mechanically find/replace that's unlikely to turn up by chance in a story otherwise. But I suspect half the people reading them these days don't even know it's possible to do that.
