That sentiment has nothing to do with fandom; it's a common feeling in contemporary culture. Often with those who have a wide circle of friends of both sexes - that's the dating pool right there. It functions as a screening process: those included in the group have something in common with you, whether it be background, level of education, or worldview. I think those who have to rely on dating strangers probably have a social network consisting of those of their own sex, which is a less... "fashionable" way of socializing these days, and so therefore they have to either rely on "referrals", so to speak, or seek out their own partners blindly.

Right. Sorry - obviously I was speaking from a straight person's point of view. Someone else would have to say about the current dating trends amongst gays and lesbians.

from what ive observed of my friends? pretty much the same. only when youve got a big group of gay men or lesbians, versus a big group of straight girls and guys, theres even more crossover between who dates who, leading to infinitely more drama.
