It's not like the stranger is asking to jump into bed with you that second, though. A date is generally a get-to-know-you kind of thing, not an indication that you're already in a relationship. A lot of people fall in love with friends they already know, and a lot of people fall in love with new people precisely because the friends they know are just that, friends.

I just think it's weird to "get to know" someone with romantic shit being at the forefront of your mind - as if that's what the whole relationship with them is going to be about or part of.

Sure I don't discredit it as a way to meet new people, but for me it's just not an idea I'm comfortable with. I'm awkward enough around people who don't see me as attractive, so I'd rather fall in love with someone and know them as a friend first before considering asking them out - less pressure on both of us. I think that's what this is about, anyway.
