There is some extent to which it is true but it is also often the case that the authoritarian government does have, or historically has had, significant levels of support from the populace and that has to be taken into account.

It's too easy to just wave the whole thing away as "well, they're oppressed and have no choice." To the extent that people do or did support the regime, they bear some degree of responsibility.

in the case of the U.S. the republican voters are often brainwashed by Fox news and other conservative "news" outlets and they never see or hear about actual reality because they have no other news source. they're basically a cult and i have not yet figured out how one goes about getting people out of cults.

Honey what do you think the media in Russia does? With the exception that actual true news outlets are actually blocked a lot and you can't access them without proxies, unlike MAGA assholes who could access all other new but don't want to.

Also this outlets are being blocked from inside and from outside the country. So have fun time try telling your old relatives that they need to use VPN and read news preferably in a different language. And you need to use new server every other day.

Yep, and this isn't even counting the rural areas where internet connections are spotty at best and where not a lot of young people live.

Yeah, and just fuck the rest of the populace that doesn't support the government and gets arrested or killed for protesting. They should have had the sense to be born somewhere with a government they could agree with.

That's not what the post you're replying to says.
