I was just whining to my brother about this. We miss the organization and the conversation styles of message boards of old. It also felt more like a community. Reddit feels more like a giant room people are shouting in. He didn't do LJ, but I also miss that set up. I've only just come back to Dreamwidth and I'm sad how dead it is.

Ridiculous how bad Reddit is. Not even in the sense of being mean or nasty, just in the sense of conversations being boring and people having nothing intelligent to contribute, or funny or interesting to say. It's dry as dust. It's everyone shouting in a room and only the most conventional, banal things people say get surfaced.

This, and don't forget the people who are super good at talking out their asses. Reddit is ruled by people who are really good at sounding like they know what they're talking about while in fact knowing nothing. Meanwhile, the expert has been downvoted to oblivion for daring to tell an unpopular or inconvenient truth.

While I do miss message boards, I honestly really love tumblr. It really depends on the fandom, but for mine it works really well.

I could never get the hang of following conversations on tumblr. It always made me feel rather dumb, which is silly but there it is.

No, I totally get it. It can be weird to follow at times. It works better in smaller fandoms, honestly. I think in bigger fandoms the conversations can get unweildy.

Message boards definitely still exist; it's very easy even just to make your own.

... getting people to go to them, though, that's the part I never got down.

I miss message boards too. Or even LJ/DW. I dislike sharing my space (dashboard) on Tumblr with everything I reblog. If you don't reblog, you get shamed for not reblogging because that's how posts get shared. Ugh. I need more organization than Tumblr allows, but that's where my fandom is.

The etiquette at Tumblr is weird AF and something I never got the hang of.
Reblog, even if it's a side blog. I won't be able to tell if it's a side blog unless the person reblogging states it somewhere on their main/side blog. And even at that who really is keeping track? Like...I don't know, Tumblr etiquette feels like "do everything to boost the person you're following to be considered a good person but how you're policed is really only known if you put that information out there and you already have a prior relationship to the person you're following"
So you know, feels like I've been handed arrows and a bow to kill us dinner but I have one hand where my fingers are glued together and I have blindfolds on.

AYRT
I could not agree more. Love your analogy!

I think it probably varies by fandom but I get what I need from Reddit. Sense of community, intelligent conversation, inside jokes, shipping…it’s all there for me. I’ve been doing fandom on Reddit for almost ten years and have never run into any problems.

Yeahhh. I think Discord has a more board-like community, but it's really difficult to find communities there. I was lurking at one server that was absolutely scratching that itch, but it closed down sadly

Discord is better imo for organised conversation - especially with their forum feature (although that is still not the same as old forums). But it's harder to find specific fandom spaces there (imo anyway). Reddit is fine, its easier to find a community, but I agree its not the same as message boards. And your milage may vary depending on the community. There are some really nice people and really nice subreddits, but there are also awful ones.

I miss LJ/DW the most I think. There are some good active fandom spaces on DW, but few and far between in my experience.
