Ugh the Mafia!AUs. It seems like every fandom goes through those at some point, which must make the fans of them very happy but as I am not one of those fans, I feel you.

Mafia AUs are great in theory. Unfortunately, in practice ----

I think part of the problem is that people don't necessarily have a lot of ideas about what exactly to *do* in a Mafia AU plotwise. The idea often seems to be just "sexy powerful criminal boss in a suit is sexy and powerful and dangerous". Which I agree with! That's a good impulse. But you need more than that to make an AU.

This is also why I wish we got more like, heist-type criminal AUs, instead of mafia AUs.

This lol! I once wrote a cat burglar AU for a big bang where one character was a detective and the cat burglar would just break in once a week, steal something, returning the thing he stole the week before JUST to annoy the detective. xD

I will say out of all the mafia AUs I've read, three stand out, and only one or two are actually quality.

The best was an AOT Levi/OC (or first person I can't recall) 1920s prohibition era Mafia AU where OC/SI masquerades as a man etc etc. There's rum running and all that mafia jazz. I felt like this one makes itself at home in the idea and place, which is why it's one of my top rated ones.

To a lesser degree, there's a 1940/50s? Mafia AU featuring Steve Rogers as a piece of shit local mob boss who runs NYC and his best friend/right hand Bucky. The OC/SI falls into an abusive relationship with Steve, Bucky tries to save her. Man ...this shit is fucked up lol. Since not reading fic for a while, I'm just realizing how much dark/abusive/messed fic I used to read lmao.

And in last place, there's a Walking Dead present day AU where the SI is the daughter of a Mafia man (idk if he's a big dude, I think so?) Who's friends with Negan, who comes in to protect/look after his friend's grown daughter. She's in her twenties, he's clearly 15+ years older than her. I think the dynamics were like bratty sub (or overall brat) and he was all...well, Negan, but with a soft spot for her/also wanted to get in her pants (it was mutual). Basically trash. A big ol'dumpster.

I'm sure I've read other ones, but these were the least shitty. Oh no! Wait, there was actually a really good one featuring Endeavour and a SI except it's a Yakuza AU (since we're going with organized crime AUs). He basically kidnaps SI in ransom bc SI has a boyfriend with a gambling habit and no way to pay. A lot of sexual tensions and teasing ensues. It's really well done. I'd place it second or on the level of the AOT one.

Yeah, they don't want their characters to do anything really bad (murder of bad people seems to be okay and alcohol in Prohibition AUs) but not other drugs or threatening/murder of regular people or running prostitution rings or standover tactics or all the other things organized crime does. Which is fine, just write a Leverage AU! But instead you get this dull not-really-a-criminal aesthetics version.

Yeah, I think the only one I've read where there are those kind of things happening have been in the fics where the character is already a villain or villainous (I've read far too many Dabi fics where he's doing/selling hard drugs, killing folks indiscriminately or for kicks, etc. But it's not the mafia au) , or there's a dark!MC. One of them was a Majima/OC fic -- but that's the setting already! (Yakuza the game).

The issue I think is that no one wants their fave to fall under the shade of something truly heinous. They want the retractable fangs, if you will. The hint of danger and bad boy without the implications. And that's fine! It's fantasy! And for that reason, and perhaps not being familiar with it, you don't see Leverage AU, because it's essentially former criminals doing heists and what not. If your fave is a good guy to begin with, then he doesn't "need to seek redemption", or prove he's good, etc. He needs to be in a circumstance where he's been forced or born into the organized crime he's involved with. He needs to not want to be doing what he's doing. Unless there's a dark! Tag, in which case, free for all. But that's just my opinion/observation.

Ughhhh solidarity. I HATE Mafia AUs. My last hyperfixation was DROWNING in them, and they pop up in my current one, too.

It's funny, because I have enjoyed mafia stuff-- like, movies with characters in the mafia. But whenever it's an AU for a non-mafia-based fandom, my reaction is SO visceral.
